Our story
Why we built Mozhi
A child on a video call with their grandparents - smiling, nodding, but silent. That moment is why Mozhi exists.
“Every diaspora family knows it. The video call. The grandparents speak. The children understand- but when it's their turn to speak, the words don't come.”
The problem
This is the heritage language gap. Not that children don't hear the language - most do. It's that nobody ever gave them the words to speak it back when it mattered.
Most diaspora children are passive listeners. They understand the spoken language from years of hearing it at home, but were never taught to produce it. They don't need to learn from zero. They need the spoken output vocabulary to match what they already understand.
Why existing apps fail
Most mainstream language apps teach formal, written language to individual learners - neither of which is the problem. Grandparents speak warm, colloquial language. And children don't build a heritage language alone. They build it in a family.
Heritage language loss isn't a motivation problem. Parents want their children to speak. Children want to reply to their grandparents. The apps just weren't built for this.
How Mozhi is different
Spoken practiceSpoken-first, always
Every language is taught in its spoken, colloquial form - the dialect grandparents actually use. Not formal grammar. Not textbook conjugations. The language of mealtimes, video calls, and family moments.
Family centredBuilt for the family unit
Heritage language is a family project, not a solo one. One account, every child, parents who can see and celebrate progress together.
Equal depthEvery language, equal depth
Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Gujarati, Punjabi - each built with the same care. Not a translated template. Native speakers. Real phrases.
The goal
The goal isn't a streak. The goal is the moment your child picks up the phone and actually speaks. Mozhi is built for that moment - and every small step toward it.
“A language spoken is a culture kept alive.
We’re here to keep it spoken.”— Mozhi
What's next
Mozhi is scaling every launch language with the same spoken-first depth - native-speaker audio, family-ready chapters, and real phrases children can use outside the app.
